Founded in 1997, Cyprus International University (CIU) is a private, English-medium university located about 5 km from North Nicosia city centre. It launched with just 81 students and has grown to over 18,000 students and more than 1,000 staff. CIU’s mission centers on offering multicultural, forward-looking education with strong international engagement, membership in global academic associations, and sustainability-focused infrastructure (library, sports complex, research centres).
CIU’s campus is a modern Mediterranean setting spanning approximately 150,000 m². It combines academic, cultural, and recreational spaces, including:
Fully equipped smart classrooms, labs, studios
Major sports complex (“CIU Arena”) with indoor/outdoor courts, semi‑Olympic pool, fitness centre
Large library, student centre, on-campus cafés, supermarket, health & career services
On-campus housing for ~70% of students across apartment and dorm-style facilities
CIU emphasizes a high-quality, student-centered educational model with a 1:1 computer-to-student ratio and 1:20 staff-to-student ratio in many programs. Over 64 nationalities are represented on campus, fostering a global student community.
The university comprises multiple faculties: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Arts & Sciences, Education, Law, Economics & Administrative Sciences, Communication, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences. In addition, CIU houses institutes offering 38+ undergraduate, 23+ master’s, and 12+ PhD programs. It also has several specialized research centres (e.g., environmental, underwater archeology, biotechnology, gender studies).
CIU supports international mobility through articulation agreements and dual-degree partnerships with UK universities (Sunderland, Wolverhampton), Spain/Switzerland (EU Business School), and Rome (Tor Vergata). It holds membership or accreditation from bodies including YÖDAK (TRNC), YÖK (Turkey), IAU, ECPR, EAIE, NAFSA, WAUC, FUIW, ECBE, CHRIE, IGIP, and UK NARIC. It was ranked in the 601–800 band by Times Higher Education in interdisciplinary sciences and 64th in the 2024 UI GreenMetric sustainability rankings.
However, CIU operates in a region with limited international recognition—diplomas are not widely recognized outside Turkey and some European countries. Some caution about TRNC as occupied territory persists, yet many graduates have gone on to work or study further abroad.
