ALTINBAŞ CYPRUS UNIVERSITY (ACU) is a private higher-education institution located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Established in early 2023, the university was founded by stakeholders from Altınbaş Holding and Altınbaş University with the goal of creating a modern, internationally oriented institution based on fifth-generation smart campus principles.
ACU operates in the Yenişehir district of Nicosia, the capital of TRNC. Although still a young and developing university, it aims to deliver globally aware programs and progressive learning environments. Its mission emphasizes academic excellence, innovation, sustainability, and the promotion of global peace.
The university currently offers a focused selection of graduate-level academic programs, primarily in Political Science and International Relations at both the Master’s and Doctoral levels. All degree programs are taught in English, reflecting ACU’s intention to attract international students and scholars.
In addition to its core academic degrees, ACU provides a variety of short-term and continuing education programs through its Continuing Education and Research Center. These courses serve professionals, educators, and the general public.
Examples of short-term programs include:
Life coaching
Turkish language courses
First aid and emergency response
Financial literacy
Leadership training
Intensive English programs
The institution is led by experienced academics, with Professor Dr. Mustafa Sağsan serving as the founding rector. Under his leadership, ACU has participated in education fairs, teacher-training activities, and national/international outreach efforts. The university also maintains relationships with government bodies in TRNC and Turkey as part of its visibility and expansion strategy.
ACU operates in the unique political environment of TRNC, a territory recognized only by Turkey and not by the United Nations. Because of this, universities in TRNC—including ACU—often face uncertainties regarding international degree recognition and accreditation.
In early 2024, TRNC authorities reportedly raised concerns about ACU’s (formerly WPU’s) legal authorization status, stating that it lacked certain formal approvals. This led to public confusion about the legitimacy of its programs and the recognition of its degrees. Although the university continues operating and expanding its offerings, prospective students must carefully verify accreditation.
The higher-education landscape in Northern Cyprus has also faced scrutiny. Several private institutions have been accused of misleading recruitment practices targeting students from Africa and Asia—promising international recognition and job prospects that did not materialize. While ACU has not been directly implicated, it exists within this contested and loosely regulated system. Students should therefore exercise caution, conduct thorough research, and confirm recognition with relevant authorities.
ACU’s graduate curriculum in Political Science and International Relations prepares students for careers in:

The university emphasizes peace, international cooperation, leadership development, and global citizenship.
